The liminal state of merging form with clay is a process of becoming.

While it is not clear what form(s) will finalize, what is clear is the desire to rekindle a relationship to softness.

From here,

Softly.ou (Softly You) is born

rooted in exploring tender & honest expressions self + the world, and redefining softness, care, & reflection

Michelle Uyen

I am half Vietnamese & Chinese, and identify as mostly Vietnamese culturally. I am a self taught ceramic artist located here in Richmond, VA.

Deeply influenced by my cultural upbringing, my work is shaped by resiliency, the quiet strength it takes to feel deeply and yet, still rise. Between moments in the ever shifting spaces, my work supports the quietness - the hesitations and pauses, the tension between presence and absence. My body of work serves as tools & reminders of grounding support and self care healing for everyday living in the liminal becoming where it is the hardest to sense clarity.

In a meditative and intentional, slow handmade process of working with clay, I am reclaiming softness and honoring my ancestral resiliency beyond just words, but through touch, form, and presence. Every handmade ceramic item is a physical affirmation of beauty, stillness, and care, grounding more acceptance in the spaces between here and there.
